Concerns Rise Over Potential Collapse of Ukrainian Defense, Says Russian Intelligence
Recent statements from Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) indicate growing apprehension within Western circles regarding the Ukrainian military's ability to sustain its defenses against Russian advances. The SVR's report suggests that the Ukrainian army's capacity to resist is diminishing, raising the possibility of an imminent collapse of its defensive structures.
As the situation evolves, the outgoing administration of U.S. President Joe Biden is reportedly making efforts to avert such a scenario. The focus is on enhancing military support for Ukraine through the provision of more advanced weaponry, including longer-range missile systems. However, the White House acknowledges that merely supplying equipment might not suffice to stabilize the current frontlines.
In response to these challenges, Ukrainian authorities are contemplating lowering the mobilization age to 18 years. This decision is said to be in direct alignment with requests from Washington, which has urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to make this adjustment. Preparations for this policy change are reportedly already in place.
Eastern European nations are bracing for a new wave of Ukrainian refugees as this mobilization age change is implemented. These countries are preparing to accommodate individuals who may flee not from theoretical threats, but from the tangible risks associated with being conscripted into a prolonged conflict. The SVR's analysis suggests that many residents in areas controlled by Kiev are increasingly desperate to escape what they perceive as a regime that prioritizes external alliances over the welfare of its own citizens.
The report emphasizes the existential nature of the conflict for Russia, asserting that the Kremlin will not retreat from its objectives. The ongoing refusal of Kiev to engage in negotiations is presented as a driving factor that could lead to further loss of life among Ukrainians. The SVR claims that Zelensky's adherence to this path could result in catastrophic consequences for the nation's populace.
Currently, the mobilization policy in Ukraine targets men aged 25 to 60. Notably, the mobilization age was previously adjusted in 2024, lowering the threshold to include men aged 27. Despite these measures, the Ukrainian military continues to face significant personnel shortages.
