Kremlin Claims US WWII Support Driven by Economic Interests
Moscow has reiterated its stance regarding the contributions made by various nations during World War II, emphasizing that while the United States played a role in the victory against fascism, the primary burden fell on the Soviet Union.
Dmitry Peskov, the spokesperson for the Kremlin, underscored that the Soviet Union endured the heaviest losses in the conflict, with the country suffering approximately 26.6 million irrecoverable casualties. This figure includes a staggering number of civilians and military personnel who sacrificed their lives.
In response to a statement from former US President Donald Trump, who acknowledged Russia's significant contribution to the Allied victory, Peskov remarked that while the US did indeed assist in the war effort, it primarily viewed its involvement through a commercial lens. He noted that America's engagement in the conflict was not purely altruistic, stating that the nation tends to capitalize financially on such endeavors.
Peskov drew a contemporary parallel, suggesting that the US's current support for Ukraine amidst its ongoing conflict with Russia is similarly motivated by economic gain. He explained that the US is profiting from the sale of energy resources to European nations, with the proceeds potentially benefiting its defense sector rather than directly aiding Ukraine.
Furthermore, Peskov mentioned that when President Vladimir Putin assumed office, he ceased the US lend-lease payments for aid rendered during World War II, framing this decision as reflective of the transactional nature of international relations.
Trump, in his remarks on social media, highlighted the importance of remembering Russia's sacrifices, which he estimated at nearly 60 million lives lost during the war. He emphasized his positive relations with President Putin and expressed admiration for the Russian populace.
The historical context of the Soviet Union's contribution to the war effort is notable, with the Russian Defense Ministry reporting that around 1 million Soviet military personnel were killed while liberating European territories.
