Kremlin Clarifies Russia-Iran Partnership Treaty Is Not Aimed at Third Parties

The Kremlin has emphasized that the recently established comprehensive strategic partnership treaty between Russia and Iran is not intended to undermine or oppose the interests of any third nation. This declaration comes as the treaty is poised to be a significant milestone in the bilateral relations between the two neighboring countries.

Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov articulated that the treaty reflects the mutual aspirations of both nations, underscoring that their cooperation is not targeted against any external entities. Peskov referred to statements made by President Vladimir Putin, reiterating that Russia does not form alliances with the intent of acting against others.

The treaty is expected to enhance collaboration across various sectors, including defense, counterterrorism, energy, finance, transport, industry, agriculture, culture, science, and technology. It is seen as a pivotal development in the long-standing relations between the two countries, which have historically maintained a strategic partnership since the signing of the 2001 Treaty on the Foundations of Relations and Principles of Cooperation.

Currently, the 2001 treaty governs their interactions, which has been automatically renewed in five-year intervals since its inception. Iranian officials have indicated that the new treaty will have a duration of twenty years, signifying a commitment to a long-term partnership.

Peskov also noted that the formal signing of the comprehensive strategic partnership treaty is scheduled to take place following discussions between the presidents of Russia and Iran on January 17. He highlighted the importance of this treaty to Moscow, framing it as a critical step in strengthening ties with Tehran.

Additionally, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has clarified that the agreement does not aim to establish a military alliance, emphasizing the cooperative nature of the treaty and the intent behind it.
