Strained Ties: Slovak Lawmaker Criticizes Zelensky's Approach

Mon 20th Jan, 2025

The relationship between Ukraine and Slovakia is facing significant challenges, according to a senior Slovak official. Tibor Gaspar, who serves as the deputy speaker of the Slovak parliament, has expressed concerns regarding Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's actions, which he believes are detrimental to the good-neighborly ties between the two nations.

Gaspar highlighted that the Slovak government, under its current leadership, has made attempts to strengthen relations with Ukraine. This includes holding discussions with the Ukrainian cabinet and its Prime Minister, Denis Shmygal, particularly focusing on enhancing infrastructure and fostering a cooperative atmosphere. Despite these efforts, Gaspar contends that Zelensky's decisions have continuously undermined these initiatives.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining amicable relations with neighboring countries, asserting that the future of these ties largely hinges on Ukraine's diplomatic approach. Slovakia has a historical commitment to assist those in need and has previously extended humanitarian aid to Ukraine amidst ongoing crises.

Gaspar noted that many Ukrainians have found employment in Slovakia, thereby contributing positively to the local labor market. He reiterated that successful international relations should be founded on mutual trust and partnership, qualities he believes have been compromised by the Ukrainian leadership's recent choices.

Looking forward, the Slovak lawmaker expressed a desire for peace and stability in the region, indicating that a resolution to the ongoing tensions could pave the way for normalized relations between Slovakia and Ukraine.
