The President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, traveled to Kyiv for critical discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky regarding escalating tensions in the Transnistria region, a pro-Russian separatist enclave bordering Ukraine.
Transnistria, home to approximately 500,000 residents, has faced significant energy shortages since the beginning of the year. The expiration of a gas transit agreement between Kyiv and Moscow has resulted in the cessation of Russian gas supplies to the region, leading to widespread heating, hot water, and electricity outages.
Upon her arrival in Kyiv, Sandu expressed intentions to address multiple pressing issues, including security, energy, infrastructure, trade, and cooperation in relation to the European Union's initiatives. The situation in Transnistria has prompted local demonstrations, where residents have called on the Moldovan government to facilitate the transit of Russian gas to alleviate the ongoing energy crisis.
Previously, Transnistria received gas through a pipeline that traversed both Ukraine and Moldova. However, Ukraine has declined to renew the gas transit contract that lapsed on January 1, leaving Transnistria in a state of emergency.
While Moldova has managed to avoid similar gas shortages, largely due to imports from Romania, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine raises concerns in Moldova about potential spillover effects, particularly as Russian military activities continue to threaten regional stability.
Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean has publicly accused Moscow of attempting to create instability within Moldova. He emphasized that resolving the crisis in Transnistria hinges on the withdrawal of Russian troops who have been stationed there since the 1992 conflict between Moldova and the separatist region.
Sandu's visit aims to reinforce Moldova's position as a supportive neighbor to Ukraine while also ensuring that both nations collaborate on addressing shared challenges in energy and security. The discussions are seen as crucial in strengthening bilateral ties and navigating the complexities introduced by the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the area.
