Russian Authorities Launch Terrorism Investigation Following Arson at Donation Center

Russian officials have initiated a terrorism investigation in response to an arson incident that destroyed a donation center aimed at supporting soldiers deployed in Ukraine. The event occurred in Vyborg, a town located near the border with Finland, as reported by local media on Friday.

The organization Vyborgsky Rubezh confirmed that their collection point, which was designated for contributions to Russian troops, was engulfed in flames during the early hours of Thursday. Firefighters managed to contain the blaze, which affected an area of approximately 600 square meters, and fortunately, there were no reported injuries.

According to reports from 47news.ru, a 15-year-old student was apprehended while filming the fire. He was later released after indicating that he was recording the incident for a 48-year-old man. Following this, authorities conducted a search of the man's residence and subsequently took him into custody.

Multiple news outlets, including 47news.ru and Fontanka, indicated that the ongoing investigation is treating the fire as a potential act of terrorism. However, it remains unclear whether the detained individual has been formally labeled a suspect. Fontanka also reported that the man was initially charged with minor hooliganism and for allegedly "discrediting" the Russian armed forces prior to the escalation of the investigation to a terrorism case.
