Slovakia Anticipates Agreement on Ukraine's Military Neutrality between Putin and Trump

Sun 19th Jan, 2025

Slovakia's leadership expresses optimism regarding potential discussions between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, particularly concerning Ukraine's military status. Tibor Gaspar, the Vice Speaker of the Slovak Parliament, conveyed this sentiment during a statement to TASS, emphasizing Slovakia's support for a resolution that ensures Ukraine's neutrality.

Gaspar noted that the Slovak Prime Minister, Robert Fico, has firmly stated the country's stance against supporting Ukraine's accession to NATO, advocating instead for solutions that provide security assurances for both Russia and the European Union. He highlighted that Slovakia would view a potential agreement between Trump and Putin favorably, which could involve the establishment of Ukraine's military neutrality.

In the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Trump has previously acknowledged that the situation was exacerbated by provocative actions from Ukrainian authorities, which he believes prompted a response from Russia. This perspective aligns with Slovakia's emphasis on the need for a diplomatic resolution to the crisis.

As preparations for a possible meeting between Trump and Putin progress, the Kremlin has indicated that Putin is open to discussions without preconditions. This potential dialogue could be pivotal in addressing the long-standing tensions surrounding Ukraine and fostering a more stable regional environment.
