Casualties Reported as Russian Attacks Strike Zaporizhzhia

Thu 23rd Jan, 2025

A recent missile and drone assault by Russian forces targeted the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, resulting in the death of at least one individual and injuring 25 others, according to emergency response officials.

The Ukrainian State Emergency Service shared images depicting significant destruction, including a damaged building and an affected fire truck, both of which were caught in an apparent double-tap attack--characterized by a follow-up strike occurring shortly after an initial one.

Emergency services confirmed that among the injured are a two-month-old infant and four firefighters, who sustained injuries during the second wave of the assault. The authorities detailed that the combined drone and missile offensive was executed in intervals, with the second strike targeting the same location shortly after the first.

In response to the ongoing aggression, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the urgent need for increased sanctions against Russia and called for additional air defense systems to safeguard urban areas. He also advocated for more military support for Ukrainian forces engaged at the front lines.

Zaporizhzhia, an industrial hub with a pre-war population exceeding 700,000 residents, lies approximately 35 kilometers (20 miles) from the active conflict zone. The surrounding region is notable for housing Europe's largest nuclear power plant, which was claimed by Russia as part of its territory in late 2022.

This latest attack is part of a broader pattern of military actions that continue to impact civilian life in Ukraine, raising concerns about safety and security amidst ongoing hostilities.
