Drone Strikes Hit Industrial Sites in Russia's Tatarstan Region

Mon 20th Jan, 2025

Ukrainian drones have reportedly targeted industrial facilities in the Republic of Tatarstan, located approximately 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) from Ukraine's borders, according to reports from Russian media and officials in Kyiv. The regional government of Tatarstan indicated that an attempted drone attack was thwarted without any reported injuries or damage to infrastructure.

During the drone strikes, at least two regional airports were forced to suspend flights. Andriy Kovalenko, who heads Ukraine's disinformation countermeasures center, noted that explosions were detected in Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan. This city is home to significant industrial installations, including the Gorbunov Kazan Aviation Plant and Kazan Helicopters, as well as the Kazan State-Owned Gunpowder Plant.

Kovalenko commented on the increasing difficulty of securing Russian airspace while refraining from directly confirming Ukraine's involvement in the drone strikes. Videos shared via the Astra Telegram news channel purportedly capture the explosions resulting from the attacks on the Gorbunov facility.

The Gorbunov Kazan Aviation Plant, which President Vladimir Putin visited last February while piloting a Tupolev Tu-160M strategic bomber, has been under European Union sanctions due to its role in the manufacture and repair of strategic bombers such as the Tu-160 and Tu-22M3M.

Russian Defense Ministry officials claimed that their air defense systems successfully intercepted 31 Ukrainian drones, primarily aimed at industrial targets across Tatarstan and five other regions overnight. In the Kaluga region, adjacent to Moscow, debris from a downed drone ignited a fire at an industrial location, though local officials reported that the fire was quickly extinguished.

Additionally, in the Bryansk region, which shares a border with Ukraine, authorities reported the destruction of 14 drones and four HIMARS missiles, further indicating the ongoing hostilities in the region.
