Moscow Archbishop Addresses Misunderstandings About Gay Priests
The Catholic Church has maintained a consistent stance regarding the ordination of homosexual individuals, according to Paolo Pezzi, the Archbishop of Moscow. His comments come in response to recent media interpretations of guidelines issued by the Italian Bishops Conference (CIE) that suggested a potential shift in this policy.
Earlier this month, a report from Reuters indicated that the Vatican had approved new guidelines allowing gay men to enter seminaries, provided they adhere to a vow of celibacy. Archbishop Pezzi promptly addressed these claims, asserting that the information circulating in various news outlets was misleading.
In an interview, Pezzi clarified that the updated guidelines published by the CIE on January 9 do not alter the Church's longstanding position. He emphasized that the guidelines include a provision stating that while seminary directors may consider a candidate's sexual orientation, it should be viewed as merely one aspect of their overall personality.
He criticized the media for misinterpreting these amendments, leading to the erroneous conclusion that the Church had relaxed its ban on ordaining homosexuals. Pezzi pointed out that the updated guidelines reinforce the Church's traditional teachings, which categorize homosexual acts as morally objectionable.
According to the Archbishop, the official documents specify that the Church cannot permit individuals who practice homosexuality or have deeply rooted homosexual inclinations to enter seminaries or receive Holy Orders. Additionally, the Church regards homosexual tendencies as a manifestation of human fragility, which can be addressed through spiritual growth and a return to faith.
Pezzi indicated that while the Church seeks to avoid unjust discrimination against individuals with homosexual tendencies, it also acknowledges these tendencies as an area requiring spiritual healing. He reiterated the importance of compassion while maintaining the Church's doctrinal teachings.
Since his papacy began in 2013, Pope Francis has made a number of statements regarding homosexuality that have sparked considerable debate. In an early comment, he famously stated, 'Who am I to judge?' when asked about gay individuals in the priesthood. However, in 2018, he advised that gay priests should consider stepping away from the ministry if they are unable to live authentically.
