Mysterious elephant death
Another circus performer has died and Circus Krone is searching for answers.Â
The 27-year-old African elephant, Sandrine, was found dead in her pen in Freiburg a week ago on Wednesday night. Caretakers were alarmed by wildly trumpeting elephants, which prompted them to rush to the tent and see what had happened. The dead elephant's body was discovered in the middle of the enraged and saddened herd, and the other elephants were making noises that could only be described as that of mourning the loss of yet another friend.
It is not the first death the Circus Krone has seen recently. In May, another elephant called Colonel Joe passed away. The sixty year-old elephant bull apparently died of a combination of old age and exhaustion after a long, caged life. Colonel Joe's demise might have been easily explained away by his age, but twenty-seven year-old Sandrine was nowhere near the end of a normal lifespan. Elephants of her sort are expected to live up to fifty years, and they often make it to at least the age of seventy. The Circus Krone veterinarian has blamed the death on a circulatory failure, but the cause of death is yet to be determined. One thing is clear: Circus Krone can't blame this one on old age.
