Russian Defense Claims Interception of 55 Ukrainian Drones Amid Oil Depot Fire
Russia's Defense Ministry reported on Tuesday that its air defense systems successfully intercepted 55 drones launched by Ukrainian forces overnight. This operation stretched across six Russian regions and was marked by falling debris that ignited a fire at an oil depot located near the Ukrainian border.
The Voronezh region, adjacent to Ukraine, saw the downing of six drones. Local Governor Alexander Gusev confirmed that debris from one of the intercepted drones led to a fresh fire at a fuel depot, which had been the site of a similar incident only six days prior. Fortunately, Gusev stated that there were no injuries reported, and emergency services were deployed to manage the situation and safeguard the local population.
In addition to the drones shot down in Voronezh, the Defense Ministry indicated that 22 were intercepted in the Bryansk region, 12 in Rostov, and 10 in Smolensk, which borders Belarus. Reports also indicated that four drones were downed in the Saratov region, home to a significant Russian air force base, while one drone was intercepted over the Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces have maintained a presence following a border incursion last August.
Unverified footage circulated on social media purportedly showed a residential building in the Smolensk region engulfed in flames after being struck by a drone. However, Governor Vasily Anokhin dismissed these claims as misinformation intended to incite panic. He emphasized the need to remain calm and not spread unverified information.
There have been allegations circulating on anonymous Telegram channels that Ukrainian drones were aimed at an aviation facility in Smolensk, raising concerns about the ongoing conflict's impact on civilian infrastructure.
