Ukrainian Drone Attacks Lead to Shutdown of Major Russian Microchip Facility

Fri 24th Jan, 2025

The Kremniy El microchip manufacturing plant, located in the Bryansk region of western Russia, has suspended its operations following a significant overnight drone assault attributed to Ukraine. This incident marks one of the most substantial drone strikes on Russian territory since the beginning of the ongoing conflict.

Reports indicate that six drones targeted the Kremniy El facility during the early hours of January 24, causing damage to key production areas and the warehouse housing finished products. The plant's press office confirmed that the attack resulted in disruptions to both the power supply and assembly lines, although no injuries were reported.

In response to the attacks, the Russian Defense Ministry stated that its air defense systems successfully engaged and neutralized a total of 121 Ukrainian drones that night, including 37 in the Bryansk region, which is situated approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) from the border with Ukraine.

Kremniy El is recognized as one of the largest microelectronics producers in Russia, employing around 1,700 individuals and generating an annual output valued at approximately 3.9 billion rubles (about $39.7 million). A substantial portion of its production--94%--is allocated to the Russian Defense Ministry, supplying critical components for various military systems, including the Pantsir and S-500 missile systems, as well as Kalibr cruise missiles, as reported by local media sources.

This incident is not the first of its kind for the Kremniy El plant; it has previously faced drone strikes since the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine, highlighting the ongoing vulnerabilities of key Russian infrastructure amidst the ongoing hostilities. As the situation develops, the implications of such attacks on Russia's defense capabilities and microelectronics sector are likely to be closely monitored by both military analysts and geopolitical observers.
