VKontakte Surpasses YouTube in Russian Web Traffic for the First Time

In a significant shift in the digital landscape, the Russian social media platform VKontakte has overtaken YouTube in monthly web traffic for the first time, according to recent data from the research firm Mediascope.

Reports indicate that in December, VKontakte attracted nearly 92 million visitors, surpassing YouTube, which recorded 89.6 million visitors during the same period. This change marks a notable increase in VKontakte's user engagement, which has been on the rise since August, coinciding with reported playback issues that many users in Russia experienced on YouTube.

The decrease in YouTube's traffic, which fell by 6% from the previous month, contrasts with VKontakte's increase of 2.8%. Analysts suggest that the decline in YouTube's popularity may be linked to ongoing tensions between the platform and the Russian government, particularly following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

As YouTube has become a crucial platform for dissenting voices in Russia, the government has tightened its grip on internet and media freedoms. The Kremlin has accused Google of manipulating the platform for political purposes, with President Vladimir Putin claiming the U.S. government uses YouTube as a tool for its interests.

Furthermore, rights organizations have noted that a significant number of criminal cases against anti-war activists stem from content shared on VKontakte and the messaging app Telegram. VKontakte is increasingly seen as a viable alternative for users seeking a less restricted environment to share their views.

In response to the growing competition, VKontakte is actively courting popular Russian YouTubers to migrate to its VK Video platform by offering attractive financial incentives. This strategy aims to bolster user engagement and create a more robust alternative to YouTube in the Russian digital space.
