Houthi Forces Claim Downing of US Drone in Yemen
DUBAI - Houthi insurgents from the Yemeni group Ansar Allah have reported the successful downing of a US MQ-9 Reaper drone in the Marib province of Yemen. The group's military spokesperson, Yahya Saria, stated that the unmanned aerial vehicle was engaged in what they described as a hostile mission within the region's airspace.
This incident marks the second time in just over 72 hours that the Houthis have claimed to have destroyed an MQ-9 Reaper drone. According to Saria, the group has managed to down a total of 14 such drones since a surge in tensions throughout the Middle East began to escalate.
The Houthi movement has expressed its intention to target Israeli interests, particularly following the recent intensification of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the Gaza Strip. The group has declared that it will take measures against Israeli territories and prevent vessels associated with Israel from navigating through the Red Sea and the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait until military actions in Gaza cease. Since November 2023, the Houthis have reportedly attacked numerous civilian vessels in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
In reaction to these developments, US authorities have announced the formation of an international coalition and the launch of Operation Prosperity Guardian. This initiative aims to safeguard freedom of navigation and protect commercial vessels operating in the Red Sea. Subsequently, US and UK forces have conducted ongoing strikes targeting Houthi military installations in Yemen.
The situation remains dynamic as the region grapples with escalating tensions and military confrontations. The Houthis' claims of drone interceptions highlight the ongoing conflict and the complexity of military engagements in the area, as various factions navigate the intertwined issues of regional security, international shipping, and geopolitical rivalries.
