Russia Claims Destruction of Eight U.S.-Provided ATACMS Missiles

Sat 4th Jan, 2025

On January 4, 2025, Russian authorities announced that they had successfully intercepted and destroyed eight ATACMS missiles supplied by the United States to Ukraine. This development comes amid ongoing tensions, with Moscow previously cautioning that the deployment of such advanced weaponry could incite a severe response, potentially involving hypersonic ballistic missile strikes against central Kyiv.

The U.S. government, under the outgoing administration of President Joe Biden, had authorized Ukraine to utilize these 300-kilometer-range missiles last year, a move that the Kremlin denounced as a significant escalation of the conflict.

The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that its air defense systems had not only neutralized the ATACMS missiles but had also intercepted a total of 72 drones during the same operation. Additionally, the ministry reported that Russian forces had captured the village of Nadiia, one of the remaining settlements in the eastern Luhansk region still under Ukrainian control.

In 2024, Russian advances in Ukraine reportedly extended by nearly 4,000 square kilometers (approximately 1,540 square miles), as per an analysis by Agence France-Presse (AFP). This territorial gain occurred amidst a challenging situation for the Ukrainian military, which has been grappling with persistent manpower shortages and fatigue.

As the new year commenced, both Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of conducting deadly attacks on civilians. Notably, a Russian strike on a village in the northeastern Kharkiv region resulted in the death of a 74-year-old man, according to regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov.

The situation remains highly volatile as both nations continue to navigate the complexities of the ongoing conflict, with international observers closely monitoring developments.
